PURCHASE, NY – Thomas Kropp (East Northport, NY) scored twice, including the game-winner in the 86
th minute, to give the Maritime College men's soccer team (5-5-0, 2-4-0 Skyline) a 2-1 victory over Purchase (4-5-0, 1-4-0 Skyline) at Purchase College Field on Saturday.
Maritime nearly struck first in the 18
th minute, when Kropp's shot was played off the goal line by the Purchase defense. The Panthers then took a 1-0 lead on Colman Cassidy's 32
nd-minute goal.
It would stay that way until the 77
th minute, when
Jack Burkhardt (Cutchogue, NY) fed Kropp, who snuck it by goalkeeper Mario Olmeda on the lower left to tie the game. Kropp then took a free kick from 25 yards out in the 86
th minute, and he went upper right to beat Olmeda put the Privateers in front. The goals were Kropp's first two tallies of the season.
The Privateers outshot Purchase 22-9, with Kropp firing a game-high seven shots.
Tim Nichols (West Seneca, NY) (5-5-0) made four saves in the win. Olmedo (2-1-0) was credited with two saves for the Panthers.
On Tuesday, Maritime returns to Reinhart Field for a 7 p.m. matchup with St. Joseph's Brooklyn (2-6-1, 0-4-1 Skyline). The last time the Privateers faced the Bears, they earned a 1-0 victory in the 2019 regular season finale to clinch the final spot in the Skyline Conference Tournament, which Maritime would go on to win.
