Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Maritime Falls to St. Joseph’s Brooklyn

THROGGS NECK, NY – On Monday night, the Maritime College women's volleyball team returned to Riesenberg Gymnasium for the first time in two weeks.  The Privateers (2-9, 0-5 Skyline) were unable to come away with the victory, however, as St. Joseph's Brooklyn (4-3, 2-1 Skyline) earned a 25-17, 25-22, 23-25, 25-8 win.

Maritime scored the first three points of the match before St. Joseph's Brooklyn rallied to take a 10-7 lead.  After the Privateers tied it at 10-10, the Bears went on a 12-5 run to pull ahead 22-15.  St. Joseph's Brooklyn would go on to win the first set by a 25-17 count.

The Privateers jumped out to an 8-5 advantage in the second set, but the Bears again responded.  St. Joseph's Brooklyn rattled off 15 of the next 21 points to go up 20-14.  After the Bears reached set point at 24-18, a Meghan Eagleton (Poughkeepsie, NY) kill sparked a 4-0 Maritime run that brought the Privateers within two, 24-22.  St. Joseph's Brooklyn won the next point, however, to take the set, 25-22.

That momentum carried over into the start of the third set.  After the Bears went up 4-2, Maritime scored eight points in a row to take a 10-4 lead.  St. Joseph's Brooklyn rallied within one at 13-12 before Kelly Kuhn (Lansdale, PA) slammed a kill to start a 4-1 rally that brought Maritime's cushion back to four, 17-13.  The Bears countered with a 6-1 run of their own to go in front 19-18.  Celyna Custodio (Danbury, CT) responded with back-to-back kills, though, to give the lead back to Maritime.  The Privateers extended the match with a 25-23 third-set win.

However, the comeback was not to be, as St. Joseph's Brooklyn started the fourth set by claiming the first five points.  The Bears hit .346 (11 kills, two errors, 26 attempts) in the fourth set, which they won 25-8 to close out the victory.

Custodio paced the Privateers with 12 kills.  Jessica Mele (Southold, NY) added nine kills and nine digs, while Carolina Bersani (Bronx, NY) finished with eight digs.  Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY) had a double-double with 24 assists and 16 digs.

For the Bears, Martina Urgo posted 13 kills and 14 digs.  She also posted five service aces.  Cristina Morales contributed 11 kills and three blocks, while Kaitlyn Intindola handed out 39 assists to go along with five aces.  Grace Kane tallied a match-high 15 digs, and Carol Melo added 14 digs for St. Joseph's Brooklyn.

After playing five matches in seven days, the Privateers will now have more than a week off before returning to action.  Maritime visits Yeshiva (0-1, 0-1 Skyline) next Tuesday at 8 p.m.
