NEW YORK – The Maritime College women's volleyball team took the court for the first time in over a week on Tuesday night. And the well-rested Privateers returned with their most impressive performance of the season. Maritime (3-9, 1-5 Skyline) dominated Yeshiva (0-4, 0-4 Skyline) 25-14, 25-16, 25-8 at the Max Stern Athletic Center to earn its first Skyline Conference win of the season and snap its five-match losing streak.
Maritime never trailed in the first set, scoring five of the first six points. After Yeshiva made it 9-5, the Privateers rattled off four straight points to increase their advantage to 13-5. The Maccabees got back within 20-14 before
Samantha Hart (Brooklyn, NY) smashed a kill to start a 5-0 run that closed out the set, 25-14.
After Yeshiva jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second set, the Privateers used a 7-1 spurt to open up a 9-4 cushion. The lead eventually reached 18-8 before the Maccabees battled back within 21-14. Maritime won four of the next six points, though, to finished off the set, 25-16, and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, it was all Maritime.
Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY) served three consecutive aces to start the set, as the Privateers opened up a 9-0 advantage. After a service error ended the run, Maritime rattled off another six points in a row to increase its lead to 15-1. A kill by
Jessica Mele (Southold, NY) wrapped up the 25-8 set win that clinched the Privateers' second 3-0 sweep of the season.
Celyna Custodio (Danbury, CT) paced Maritime with seven kills. Mele added five kills and three aces, while Kirchner had 15 assists and seven aces.
Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) registered a match-high eight digs, and
Carolina Bersanti (Bronx, NY) contributed six digs.
For Yeshiva, Shira Srendi led the way with five kills, three aces and seven digs. Tali Miller handed out five assists, while Ashley Botnick distributed three assists to go along with five digs. As a team, the Maccabees outdug the Privateers 27-256.
This began a busy stretch in which Maritime will play five matches in seven days. The Privateers welcome Old Westbury (3-6, 2-4 Skyline) to Riesenberg Gymnasium on Thursday for a 6 p.m. matchup.
