THROGGS NECK, NY – Two days after a dominant victory over Yeshiva, the Maritime College women's volleyball team put together another solid performance on Thursday night. And with that effort, the Privateers (4-9, 2-5 Skyline) picked up their second straight win, a 25-16, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23 triumph over Old Westbury (3-7, 2-5 Skyline) at Riesenberg Gymnasium.
The Panthers had a 16-11 lead in the first set when
Kelly Kuhn (Lansdale, PA) began serving. Maritime didn't lose another point the rest of the set. Four consecutive kills by
Meghan Eagleton (Poughkeepsie, NY),
Celyna Custodio (Danbury, CT) and
Jessica Mele (Southold, NY) capped the 15-0 run to end the stanza, which the Privateers won by a 25-16 count. Maritime hit .370 as a team in the opening frame, slamming 12 kills while committing just two errors in 27 attempts.
That momentum carried into the third set, as Maritime jumped out to a 7-3 advantage. After a Custodio kill made it 21-15, Old Westbury rattled off four straight points to get back within two, 21-19. However, the Privateers responded with back-to-back points, and a kill by Kuhn closed out the set, 25-22.
There were nine ties and five lead changes in a back-and-forth third set. Old Westbury pulled in front 8-3, then Maritime used a 9-1 spurt to go up 12-9. After the Panthers regained a 15-13 advantage, the Privateers scored three straight points to retake the lead. The set was tied for the last time at 21-21 before Old Westbury rattled off the final four points of the frame. With the 25-21 set win, the Panthers sent the match into a fourth set.
Maritime started the fourth set on a 6-0 rally, but Old Westbury responded with the next four points. The Privateers pushed the margin to seven points at 13-6 before the Panthers went on a 12-3 run to take an 18-16 advantage. Old Westbury led 22-21 when a Custodio kill started a three-point spurt that brought Maritime to match point. She then slammed her 15
th kill of the night to finish off the set, 25-23, and the 3-1 victory.
Custodio paced the Privateers offensively, hitting .375 in the match. She also tallied three blocks. Mele had a double-double with 12 kills and a team-high 13 digs, while
Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY) finished with 37 assists and nine digs.
Carolina Bersani (Bronx, NY),
Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) and Eagleton contributed 10 digs apiece, and Eagleton added seven kills. As a team, Maritime hit .213 (47-18-136) in the match.
For Old Westbury, Daesha Gordon led the way with 16 kills. Cameron McGinn tallied eight kills and 14 digs, and Gianna DiLillo posted 11 digs to go along with five service aces. Juliana Evans, meanwhile, served four aces for the Panthers. Melinda Harris tallied 19 assists, 17 digs and five kills, while Geanelle Sam contributed 10 digs and two blocks.
On Saturday, Maritime plays a pair of match at Bard College. The Privateers take on the host Raptors (5-11) at 10 a.m. before facing Skyline Conference rival St. Joseph's (LI) (5-10) in a non-conference tilt at 12 p.m. The Golden Eagles earned a 3-0 win over Maritime on Sept. 30.
