Maritime’s Winning Streak Halted

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY – The Maritime College women's volleyball team saw its two-match winning streak come to an end with a pair of losses at Bard College's Stevenson Gymnasium on Saturday.  After dropping a tough five-setter to Bard (6-11), 22-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 15-9, the Privateers (4-11) fell to St. Joseph's (LI) by a 25-23, 25-11, 25-11 count in their second match of the day.

There were 10 ties and five lead changes in the first set of Maritime's match against Bard.  The Raptors had a 19-15 advantage when the Privateers went on a 7-1 run to go up 22-20.  Bard scored the next two points to tie the score, but Maritime won the next three to take the set, 25-22.  The Privateers had 13 kills in the frame and hit .257 (four errors, 35 attempts).

Bard captured the first three points of the second set, but Maritime rallied to tie the score at 9-9.  The Raptors responded with a 14-4 spurt, though, to build a 23-13 cushion.  The Privateers countered with five of the next six points to get within 24-18 before Bard closed out the set, 25-18, and leveled the match.

In a back-and-forth third set, there were 13 ties and seven lead changes.  Maritime broke a 19-19 deadlock with four consecutive points, but Bard followed with four points of its own to tie the score once again at 23-23.  A Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY) kill brought the Privateers to set point, and Victoria Cordero (Bronx, NY) finished off the 25-23 win with a service ace.

After Bard raced out to a 5-1 advantage in the fourth set, Maritime rallied to tie it at 6-6.  The Raptors regained the lead, 15-11, but the Privateers again responded, rattling off four straight points to level the score at 15-15.  However, Bard claimed five of the next six points to go ahead 20-16, and the Raptors set up a decisive frame with their 25-20 fourth-set win.

Maritime scored the first two points of the fifth set and led 4-3 before Bard used a 5-0 run to go in front, 8-4.  After the Raptors extended their cushion to 11-5, the Privateers got kills from Erica Pagano (Lawrence, NY), Celyna Custodio (Danbury, CT) and Meghan Eagleton (Poughkeepsie, NY) to pull within three at 11-8.  That's as close as Maritime would get, however, as Bard scored four of the last five points to earn a 15-9 set win and a 3-2 match victory.

Three Privateers had double-doubles in the match.  Meghan Eagleton tallied 10 kills and 15 digs, and Jessica Mele (Southold, NY) posted 10 kills and 14 digs.  Kirchner, meanwhile, finished with 30 assists and 10 digs.  Custodio slammed a team-best 14 kills.  Maritime outdug Bard 85-63 in the match, with Cordero contributing a career-high 28 digs.

Laurel Edwards paced the Raptors with 18 kills.  Anna Skamser reigstered eight kills to go along with six aces.  Puja Clements notched 19 digs and seven aces, while Adi David recorded 37 assists, 11 digs and five aces.  Annie Couey added 10 digs for Bard.

Later in the day, Maritime played a non-conference match against Skyline Conference foe St. Joseph's (LI).  The Privateers got off to a good start against the Golden Eagles, scoring the first five points of the match and opening up an 8-1 cushion in the first set.  St. Joseph's (LI) battled back, however, using a 9-2 run to turn a 17-11 deficit into a 20-19 advantage.  The Privateers went back in front, 23-22, on a pair of Kirchner aces, but the Golden Eagles captured the next three points to take the set, 25-23.

St. Joseph's (LI) jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second set and eventually extended that margin to 12-5.  Maritime got back within four at 14-10, but the Golden Eagles ended the set on an 11-1 run to claim a 25-11 victory.  St. Joseph's (LI) hit a combined .524 (13-2-21) in the second set.

It was more of the same in the third set, as the Golden Eagles scored the first five points and never looked back.  After St. Joseph's (LI) increased its lead to 12-3, the Privateers rattled off three straight points to make it 12-6.  The Golden Eagles followed with another 6-0 run, however, en route to an easy 25-11 win that clinched the straight-sets triumph.  The St. Joseph's (LI) offense didn't commit an attack error in the set, hitting .667 (12 kills, 18 attempts).

Mele led the Privateers with five kills and six digs, and Cordero also collected six digs.  Kirchner, meanwhile, served six aces to go along with 13 assists.

As a team, St. Joseph's (LI) hit .409 (36-9-66) in the match.  Deirdre Carney had 11 kills on .556 hitting while also recording six aces.  Amanda Goldstein finished with eight kills and three aces, and Tara Langford tallied six aces.  Veronica Miessmer handed out 10 assists, while Kellianne Dempsey tallied a match-high seven digs for the Golden Eagles.

On Monday, Maritime (2-5 Skyline) begins a two-match homestand by welcoming Merchant Marine (16-3, 8-1 Skyline) to Riesenberg Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. showdown.
