Schmidt Scores Twice In Thrilling OT Win

THROGGS NECK, NY – Frank Schmidt (Massapequa Park, NY) had a pair of goals, including the overtime game-winner, as the Maritime College men's soccer team (4-4-0, 1-3-0 Skyline) knocked off St. Joseph's (LI) (2-4-1, 1-3-1 Skyline) by a 2-1 score at Reinhart Field on Friday night.  The victory snapped the Privateers' three-game losing streak.

Schmidt's first goal came in the 35th minute.  After Maritime earned a corner kick, he got free in front of the net and blasted one from 25 yards out.  The ball banged off the crossbar and in, giving Maritime a 1-0 lead.

After the Golden Eagles tied the game on Vincent Mariani's 71st-minute goal, the Privateers had a chance to win it when Schmidt drew a penalty kick in the 86th minute.  St. Joseph's (LI) goalkeeper Tyler Flaherty stopped the PK, however, then smothered the rebound.  Maritime peppered Flaherty (2-3-1) with 19 second half shots, but he made seven saves over the final 45 minutes to keep the score knotted at 1-1.

Maritime continued its offensive onslaught in the extra period.  Flaherty saved a Christopher Tavernese (Garden City, NY) shot early in overtime, then Ryan Breaton's (Bayport, NY) went wide before Schmidt connected for the game-winner in the 95th minute.  Tavernese took a throw in and set up Joseph Cebollero (Commack, NY), who tapped it to Schmidt in the left side of the box.  And he put home a half volley to give Maritime the 2-1 victory.

With the two goals, Schmidt is now tied for the team lead with three on the season.  Tavernese's assist was his second, while Breaton recorded his first assist of 2021.  Nichols (4-4-0) recorded four saves in the winning effort.

The Privateers finished with a 27-10 edge in shots, including a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal.  Maritime also earned 11 corner kicks to the Golden Eagles' four.

On Tuesday night, the Privateers host Manhattanville (2-4-2, 1-0-1 Skyline) at 7 p.m.  It will be the first meeting between the teams since Maritime's shootout victory over the Valiants in the semifinals of the 2019 Skyline Tournament.
