FARMINGDALE, NY – Christopher Tavernese's (Garden City, NY) 23
rd-minute goal proved to be the difference on Saturday, as the Maritime College men's soccer team (6-6-0, 3-5-0 Skyline) recorded a 1-0 victory over Old Westbury (2-9-1, 0-7-1 Skyline). The game was played at Farmingdale State's Rams Field.
After a pair of early opportunities by
Ryan Breaton (Bayport, NY) and
Jack Dugan (Mount Sinai, NY), Maritime finally broke through in the 23
rd minute. Tavernese's initial shot was saved by Old Westbury goalkeeper James Perciballi, but the rebound went right back to him, and he put it away to give the Privateers a 1-0 lead.
It remained 1-0 thanks to Perciballi (2-9-1), who made seven saves in the contest. Maritime goalkeeper
Tim Nichols (West Seneca, NY) (6-6-0), meanwhile, had two saves in his fourth shutout of the season. Nichols recorded his first clean sheet since the 4-0 win at Cobleskill on Sept. 19, as the Privateers held on for the 1-0 victory.
Maritime outshot Old Westbury 12-7, including an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. The Privateers also had eight corner kicks to the Panthers' one. Tavernese is now tied for the team lead with three goals.
With the win, Maritime now sits two points clear of St. Joseph's (LI) for the the sixth and final qualifying spot in the Skyline Conference Tournament. The Privateers have three games remaining on their regular-season schedule, two of which are at Reinhart Field, including a 7:30 p.m. matchup with Yeshiva (2-4-0, 2-3-0 Skyline) on Tuesday.
