THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College men's soccer team welcomed Yeshiva to Reinhart Field on Tuesday night. With both teams battling for the sixth and final spot in the Skyline Conference Tournament, it was the Maccabees (3-5-0, 3-4-0 Skyline) who came out on top, earning a 2-1 victory over the Privateers (6-7-0, 3-6-0 Skyline).
It was a very evenly-played first 25 minutes, as goalkeepers
Tim Nichols (West Seneca, NY) and Sagi Badash both made some excellent saves to keep the contest scoreless. Yeshiva nearly broke the deadlock in the 27
th minute, but the Maritime defense kept it out of the net. The Maccabees did get the game's first goal in the 29
th minute, when Alejandro Saul placed one perfectly inside the right post.
Yeshiva increased its lead to 2-0 on David Abittan's goal in the 55
th minute. The Privateers, however, would cut their deficit in half when
Thomas Kropp (East Northport, NY) sent a low roller past Badash in the 64
th minute. Maritime was unable to find an equalizer, though, as the Maccabees held on for the 2-1 win.
Kropp's goal was his third of the year, tying him for the team lead.
Thomas Luongo (Center Moriches, NY) was credited with an assist in the score. Nichols (6-7-0), meanwhile, made six saves in net.
Badash (3-2-0) recorded three saves for the Maccabees, including a clutch stop on
Larry Castello's (Hauppauge, NY) 87
th-minute shot. Yeshiva outshot Maritime 15-9 in the contest.
Maritime concludes its home schedule on Saturday at 12 p.m. against Merchant Marine (10-6-0, 7-2-0 Skyline). The Privateers will celebrate Senior Day for both this year's and last year's classes prior to the game.
