BUZZARDS BAY, M.A. -- The Maritime College women's lacrosse team held off Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 11-7, in game one of the 2020 Maritime Cup, hosted in Buzzards Bay, M.A. With the victory, the Privateers improve to 2-1 on the season.
The Privateers offense was led by senior
Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, NY/Miller Place) who recorded eight points, including six goals.
Mackenzie Fabiani (Bayport, NY/Bayport Blue Point) and
Nicole Johnson (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East) added two goals each, while in goal,
Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, NY/Huntington) picked up seven saves in the win.
Sara Wright (East Islip, NY/East Islip) added six wins on the draw control for Maritime, as well.
The first half was dominated by Deleva, as she netted three goals, and Johnson was able to put the ball in the net with 63 seconds remaining in the half to give the Privateers a 4-2 lead going into the break.
The second half began with the Buccaneers evening the score at 4-4 within the first nine minutes, only to have Maritime respond with goals by Wright at 19:25, Johnson at 13:37, and Deleva at 13:01 to regain control, 7-4.
Deleva scored two more times in the final minutes, while Fabiani found the back of the net twice in the game's final six minutes to put a stamp on the decisive victory for the Privateers, 11-7.
The Privateers ended the game with advantages in most major statistical categories, including a 12-to-8 advantage in draw controls, and a 36-to-33 advantage in ground balls. Maritime also took more shots on goal. 23-to-14.
The Privateers will look to win their second straight Maritime Cup on Saturday, March 7, as they face Maine Maritime at 11:00 AM.
