The Maritime College men's soccer team dropped their first matchup of the 2019 season on Saturday afternoon as they fell to Massachusetts Maritime 2-1 in the first game of the Maritime Cup.
The Privateers opened up the scoring in the 15th minute behind the foot of
James Roland (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe). However, the Buccaneers were able to respond before the end of the first half and the two teams entered the locker rooms knotted at 1.
Although Maritime was able to control the tempo of the game for the majority of play, Mass. Maritime made their chances count as their only two shots on goal made it past goalkeeper
Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham). The Buccaneers netted the game winner in the 89th minute after a yellow card on Rodriguez gave them a penalty kick opportunity.
The Privateers continued to fight to try and even up the game in the closing minute of the game as they earned a corner kick with thirty seconds left to play. However, they were unable to convert and ended up falling for the first time in 2019.
Maritime also earned seven corner kicks in the game, compared to just two from Mass. Maritime. The loss drops the Privateers to 3-1 on the season.
"It's definitely not the result we were hoping for today, but Mass. played a good game and made their chances count," said head coach Dan Gwyther. "We will regroup tonight and tomorrow morning and hopefully rebound with a good game against Maine tomorrow afternoon."
The Privateers kick off against Maine Maritime at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow.
