The Maritime College men's soccer team couldn't bounce back from a tough 2-1 loss to Mass. Maritime yesterday as they fell to Maine Maritime on Sunday afternoon by a score 2-0.
Similar to yesterday's matchup against the Buccaneerss, the Privateers had plenty of opportunities on offense, but couldn't find the back of the net against the Mariners. Both teams were held scoreless in the first half, but Maritime outshsot Maine Maritime 10-6 and held a 1-0 advantage in corner kicks. The Privateers registered five shots in the first 20 minutes of play, including three on goal. Maritime put some pressure on offensively to close the half as they tallied two shots in the final four minutes of play, including a header off their lone corner kick.
Although Maritime's offense continued to be effective, the Mariners were able to strike first as they scored the first goal of the game in the 62nd minute. The Privateers attempted to even up the score, but in the 78th minute Maine Maritime extended their advantage to 2-0. The two goal lead with less than 15 minutes to play was too much to overcome for the Privateers and they fell 2-0 to the host.
James Roland (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) took three shots on goal for Maritime, while
Christopher Tavernese (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) tallied two of his own. In goal,
Ethan Silver (New Haven, CT/Engineering and Science University) recorded three saves.
Maritime will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday when they host Berkeley (NY) at 7:30 p.m.
