Paced by Gino's Two Goals, Men's Soccer Defeats Saint Elizabeth, 3-1

THROGGS NECK, NY - The Maritime College men's soccer team knocked off College of Saint Elizabeth, 3-1, Monday evening on Reinhart Field to improve to 5-3 on the season. The Privateers never trailed, as Nicholas Gino (Levittown, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) found the back of the net twice, and Thomas Luongo (Center Moriches, NY/Center Moriches) scored as well for the home team.

Just under 20 minutes into the opening half, Maritime got on the board first, as Anthony Sblendorio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) took a shot on goal that deflected off the Eagles' keeper, and Gino swooped in for the rebound and score. The Privateers kept the pressure on the visitors, as they scored again in the 37th minute, when Luongo drove the ball past the goalkeeper off a beautiful pass from Lawrence Castello, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Gino was able to increase the Maritime lead to 3-0 with his second goal of the match, off an assist from Jack Dugan (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) in the 72nd minute. With less than three minutes remaining in the game, Saint Elizabeth would squeak a goal by the Privateers' goalie to end the shutout possibility. The freshman Ethan Silver (New Haven, CT/Engineering and Science University) was solid between the pipes, finishing with four saves, and picking up his second win of the season.

Maritime will continue their non-conference season on Wednesday, September 18, when they host New York University. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
