Men's Soccer Closes Out Non-Conference Play with 1-0 Loss to NYU

THROGGS NECK, NY - The Maritime College men's soccer team battled non-conference foe New York University (NYU) on Wednesday night, but eventually fell after the Violets netted the game winner with less than 10 minutes left in the game.

The physical and intense contest saw back and forth play right from the kick-off with both teams vying for an early lead. Although both teams took two corner kicks in the opening half, the Privateers were out-shot by the visitors 11 to three. Maritime registered three shots on target in the half by Anthony Sblendorio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore), Christopher Tavernese (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), and Thomas Kropp (East Northport, N.Y./Northport), but they weren't able to break through and entered the half knotted at zero.

In the second half, both defenses buckled down as the shot total went down. However, NYU was able to break the tie in the 81st minute after a throw-in and a quick pass led to a clear shot on target. The Violets were able to convert on the offensive opportunity and took the lead in the closing minutes. The Privateers attempted to mount a comeback, but were unable to even up the score and eventually fell 1-0.

Senior goalkeeper Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) tallied five saves in the loss. The matchup against NYU closed out non-conference competition for the Privateers and they will open up Skyline play on Wednesday, September 25 at home against the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 7:30 p.m.
