Men's Soccer Ends Skid with 3-2 Win over John Jay

The Maritime College men's soccer team ended a three-game losing streak with a big 3-2 win over non-conference foe John Jay. The Privateers trailed 1-0 early in the game, but rattled off three unanswered goals to hold off the visiting bloodhounds and improve to 4-3 on the season. The Privateers wore yellow in the afternoon contest to support the fight against Pediatric Cancer in coordination with the Go 4 the Goal Foundation. Just 11 minutes into the opening half, John Jay got on the board first behind a flurry of well-timed passes that led to an open shot from inside the box. Despite the slow start, the Privateers continued to pressure the Bloodhounds defense and they eventually ended up drawing a foul inside the box in the 29th minute. Nicholas Gino (Levittown, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) drew the foul and took the penalty kick for Maritime, but John Jay's goalkeeper made a diving save. Senior captain Justin Forrest (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) was all over the rebound though and drove the ball to the far post past to tie the game at 1-1.

Neither team was able to break the tie before halftime, but Maritime swung the momentum in their favor early in the second half as Jerome Eastwood (Houston, Texas/Stratford) found Larry Castello (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) on a cross to give the Privateers a 2-1 advantage. Maritime quickly backed up their go ahead goal when Anthony Sblendorio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) put out a beautiful pass to Christopher Tavernese (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) who easily put away the goal on an empty net.

The bloodhounds eventually answered back and cut the lead to one goal, but the Privateers defense buckled down and held onto the the 3-2 win. Freshman goalie Ethan Silver (New Haven, CT/Engineering and Science University) got the start in goal and picked up his first career win while tallying eight saves.

Maritime will continue their non-conference season on Monday night when they take on St. Elizabeth at 7:30 p.m. To see the post-game interview with head coach Dan Gwyther and some post-game highlights, look below!
