Baseball Takes Second Game of Doubleheader at St. Joseph's Long Island

The Maritime College baseball team finished off a tough Skyline Conference weekend by splitting a doubleheader at St. Joseph's College Long Island. After only scoring one run the day before against Old Westbury, the Privateers continued to struggle on offense and dropped the opening game 3-1, but they were able to wake up the bats in the second game and pick up a 4-1 win.

In the opening game, A.J. Ammirati (Queens, N.Y./Construction) got the start on the mound and limited the Golden Eagles to just one run through the first seven innings. Entering the top of the sixth inning behind 1-0, Travis Zurita (Ozone Park, N.Y./Poly Prep) led off with a solo home run to left field to tie the game. Unfortunately, the Privateers relinquished the lead back to St. Joseph's College Long Island in the bottom of the eighth and they were unable to tack on any more runs in the final inning.

Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Chaminade) and Zurita led Maritime on offense with two hits each in the 3-1 loss. Ammirati threw 7.1 innings and allowed two runs on five hits.

Looking to improve the offensive effort in the second game, Sullivan led off the top of the second with a double to left field. After the next two batters failed to advance Sullivan, it appeared the Privateers struggles were going to continue, but Ryan Rockhill (Eastchester, NY/Tuckahoe) stepped up with a clutch single to score Sullivan and give Maritime the 1-0 lead.

As Travis Bruinsma (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) continued to shut down St. Joseph's offense from the mound, Maritime picked up another run in the top of the third inning. Nick McTighe (Merrick, N.Y./Holy Trinity) led off with a double and after a sacrifice bunt from Matt Eng (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood), Phil Russo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) singled up the middle to score McTighe. In the top of the fifth, Russo picked up his second RBI of the game by hitting a sacrifice fly to score Adam Mosca (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa)

Leading 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Golden Eagles finally broke through Bruinsma and scored their first run of the game. With the bases loaded and just one out, St. Joseph's was threatening to close the gap, but Matthew Paghidas (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) entered the game and forced a clutch ground ball double play to hold the 3-1 advantage for the Privateers.

Skylar Graff (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) finished out the game on the mound for Maritime and picked up the save after throwing a scoreless seventh inning as Maritime earned the 4-1 win.

The entire starting lineup for the Privateers picked up at least one hit for Maritime while Zurita, Eng and Eric Wenig (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) added two hits.

The Privateers improved to 16-11 overall with the win and 7-3 in Skyline action. Maritime returns to Reinhart field on Tuesday, April 9 at 7 p.m. for a game against Manhattanville College.
