Women's Lacrosse Tallies First Skyline Win by Defeating Old Westbury 16-6

The Maritime College women's lacrosse team bounced back after a tough loss on Tuesday with a dominant 16-6 victory over SUNY Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon. The Privateers never looked back after a hot start as they opened up the game with seven unanswered goals.

After controlling possession for the first five minutes of the game, Maritime finally broke through and netted the first goal of the game behind a free position shot from Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip). With the first goal under their belt, the Privateers quickly racked up the goals by scoring six more in the next ten minutes of play. Seniors Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) and Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) highlighted the big run by totaling four goals and three assists between the two of them. MacKenzie Fabiani (Bayport, NY/Bay) and Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) also picked up goals during the offensive outburst.

Attempting to stay in the game, Old Westbury notched two goals within twenty seconds to cut the lead to five with just over 10 minutes remaining. However, head coach Alyssa Guido refocused the offense and they were able to take full control of the game by scoring six more goals before halftime. The 6-0 run to close out the half saw goals from four different players: Anna Smith (Sayre, Pa./Waverly), Fabiani, Murphy and Pfundstein.

With a commanding 13-2 lead to start the second half, the Privateers offense wasn't done yet as Salatto, Pfundstein, and Katherine Buser (Babylon, NY/Babylon) added one more goal each to make it a 16-2 advantage. Maritime's defense finally started to show some holes in the closing minutes, but the Privateers easily held on to the double digit win.

Maritime dominated draw controls in the contest, tallying 16 compared to just eight from the Panthers. The Privateers also dominated ground balls with a margin of 33 to 15. Wright led Maritime in both categories, with 13 draw controls and 13 ground balls. Pfundstein totaled five goals and one assist for six points while Deleva added five assists and one goal. Fabiani and Murphy each netted three goals.

Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) picked up her fifth win of the season by picking up five saves and only allowing six goals.

"It was nice to bounce back after Tuesday with a win like this," said head coach Alyssa Guido. "We defintitely still have something to prove in the conference and I think today was a good start to showing what we're capable of doing."

Maritime heads to Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday, April 9 at 4:45 p.m. for another Skyline Conference clash. Check out highlights and the post-game press conference below!
