The Maritime College women's lacrosse team made history on Tuesday afternoon as they defeated Mount Saint Vincent for their sixth win of the season, a new program record. The Privateers took out the Dolphins 10-6 to improve to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in Skyline play.
Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) got the scoring started less than a minute into the game with an unassisted goal to take a quick 1-0 lead. Mount Saint Vincent buckled down on defense after the goal and eventually tied the game at 1 nearly 10 minutes later. However, Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) and Maritime responded less than 20 seconds after and regained the lead at 2-1.
The back and forth play continued between the two teams as the score was tied at three with nine minutes remaining in the half. The Privateers were able to steal the momentum heading into halftime though by scoring three goals in the final five minutes, including a free position goal from Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) with three seconds left.
Behind goals from Deleva and Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) to begin the second half, Maritime took it's largest lead of the game at 8-3 with 23 minutes left in the game. The five-goal advantage was enough for the Privateers to hang on to as they picked up the 10-6 win to set the new program record for wins.
Deleva led the offensive effort with five points on three goals and two assists, while Pfundstein added four goals of her own. Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) won eight draw controls and scooped up six ground balls. Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) picked up another win in goal as she tallied eight saves.
The Privateers get back on the field Saturday as the host USMMA at 1 p.m. on Reinhart Field.
