The Maritime College baseball team was unable to continue it's unbeaten streak in Skyline Conference play as they dropped a pair of games to SUNY Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon. The losses dropped the Privateers to 15-10 overall and 6-2 in Skyline play.
The Panthers got off to a hot start in the opening game of the doubleheader as they posted seven runs in the first two innings. Maritime threatened to make a comeback in the top of the fourth inning after
Phil Russo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) led off with a single and back-to-back walks loaded the bases with nobody out. However, after a sacrifice fly and a double play, Old Westbury escaped the inning with only allowing one run.
Russo,
Matt Eng (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood), and
Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Chaminade) were the lone Privateers to record in the opening game.
In the second game of the doubleheader
Niko Concha (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga), the reigning Skyline Conference Pitcher of the Week, got the start on the mound. Concha held the Panthers scoreless through three innings, but after an error allowed the lead-off hitter on base in the bottom of the fourth, Old Westbury was finally able to break the 0-0 tie.
The Privateers were looking to tie the game in the following inning after a
Travis Zurita (Ozone Park, N.Y./Poly Prep) single loaded the bases with two outs. Unfortunately, Maritime wasn't able to convert and allowed the Panthers to extend their lead to 3-0 in the following two innings.
The Privateers made one final push with two outs in the top of the 7th, but once again they weren't able to bring runners across the plate.
Ryan Rockhill (Eastchester, NY/Tuckahoe), Eng, and Zurita all recorded two hits for Maritime in the loss. Concha threw 5.1 innings and only allowed one earned run.
The Privateers look to get back in the win column tomorrow in doubleheader action against St. Joseph's Long Island at 12 p.m.
