Privateers Fall in Skyline Conference Opener at St. Joseph's Long Island

The Maritime College women's lacrosse team traveled to last year's Skyline Conference runner-up, St. Joseph's Long Island, on Tuesday night and fell by a score of 11-5. The loss dropped the Privateers to 4-3 on the season and 0-1 in Skyline play.

The Golden Eagles opened up the scoring less than four minutes into the game, but the senior tandem of Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) and Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) connected for a goal three minutes later to tie the score at 1. The goal marked Pfundstein's 26th of the season and kept the game tied until halfway through the first period. Maritime's defense stifled St. Joseph's Long island until 15 minutes left in the half when they were finally able to break through. Unfortunately, Maritime struggled to recover and allowed four unanswered goals in a two-minute span. Pfundstein stopped the run for the Privateers and cut the lead to 5-2 off an assist from Jilliana Melford (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman). The Golden Eagles would go on to take the momentum back heading into the locker rooms though as they tacked on three more goals before halftime.

Maritime responded well out of halftime with a goal from Pfundstein less than a minute into the action. However, the lead was too much for Maritime's offense to mount a comeback on. Defensively, the Privateers buckled down and only allowed three second half goals, but Maritime was only able to tally three of their own as they fell 11-5 in their Skyline Conference opener.

Pfundstein led the Privateers offense with four goals, while Deleva added one goal and two assists. Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) picked up eight ground balls for Maritime, while Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) totaled nine saves in goal.

"St. Joseph's is a very good team and they gave our offense a lot of trouble tonight," said head coach Alyssa Guido. "I'm proud of how we came out in the second half though and I think we proved that we can hang with them moving forward."

Maritime is back in action on Saturday afternoon as they host Old Westbury at 1 p.m. on Reinhart Field.
