Women's Lacrosse Rolls to 18-4 Victory over Purchase College

The Maritime College women's lacrosse team moved one step closer to securing their first playoff berth in program history on Thursday night as the Privateers took out Purchase College by a score of 18-4. The victory improved their record to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in Skyline play.

Maritime was excelling on both sides of the field in the opening half as the defense shut out the Panthers and the offensive effort was led by four goals from both Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) and Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place). The first goal of the game came just over two minutes into the action of a free position attempt from Deleva. Pfundstein and Deleva then went on to trade goals before Anna Smith (Sayre, Pa./Waverly) found the back of the net to make it a 4-0 lead with 21 minutes left in the opening half. Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) and Rachel Peterson (Latham, NY/Albany Academy) also added goals to the dominant first half performance from the Privateers.

The 11-0 lead at halftime was more than enough for Maritime to coast to its third conference win as they outscored Purchase 7-4 in the second half. In addition to two goals each from Deleva and Pfundstein, MacKenzie Fabiani (Bayport, NY/Bay) chipped in two goals of her own as well as Jilliana Melford (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) tallying a goal.

Pfundstein and Deleva each recorded six goals and two assists in the win, while Murhpy added three points on one goal and two assists. The all-time program leader in draw controls, Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip), led the way with nine draw controls. Katherine Buser (Babylon, NY/Babylon) led the Privateers in ground balls with six. Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) picked up the win in goal with eight saves.

"It was good to bounce back with a win just two days after losing to Farmingdale," said head coach Alyssa Guido. "We moved one step closer to clinching playoffs, but we know we still have a tough matchup ahead against Mount Saint Mary to close out the season."

Maritime will face the Knights on April 27 at 1 p.m. for senior day. With a win, the Privateers would clinch its first playoff berth in program history.
