Women's Lacrosse Battles Farmingdale St. to 10-7 Loss

The Maritime College women's lacrosse team played a physical game against visiting Farmingdale St. on Tuesday night, but ultimately fell in a close 10-7 Skyline Conference game. The loss dropped the Privateers to 6-5 overall and 2-3 in Skyline play.

Maritime got off to a hot start as Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) scored an unassisted goal just 30 seconds into the game and then Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) followed it up four minutes later with a goal off a pass from Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place). Both defenses settled in after the early offensive surge, but it was the Privateers who scored next to make it a 3-0 advantage with 18 minutes remaining in the half.

Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) and the Maritime defense stayed strong for most of the half, but the Rams were able to score twice just before halftime to steal some momentum and cut the lead to 3-2.

Farmingdale St. kept their offensive energy going out of the locker room and made it five straight goals for a 5-3 lead. However, the Privateers weren't going to let the Rams walk away with the win as Deleva and Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) scored back-to-back and tied the game up at 5 with 24 minutes left to play.

The back and forth game continued its pattern as Farmingdale St. netted four straight goals and took control with a 9-5 lead and 13 minutes remaining. Once again, Maritime made one last push to regain the lead, but goals from Wright and MacKenzie Fabiani (Bayport, NY/Bay) with time winding down wasn't enough to complete the comeback and the Privateers fell 10-7.

"It was a really physical game and I thought we played very hard against a good Farmingdale St. team," said head coach Alyssa Guido. "Obviously it's not the result we wanted, but I think we showed what we're capable of doing on both sides of the ball and now it's just matter of maintaining that level of play for an entire game. We're going to have a quick turnaround with Purchase on Thursday, but we're ready to go out and fight for a playoff spot with our last two games."

Wright and Deleva both led the offensive effort with two goals and one assist each, while Hernandez was outstanding in net with 17 saves.

The Privateers currently sit at 2-3 overall in Skyline play and have a chance at pulling out the program's first ever postseason berth if they can win their final two games. Maritime will travel to Purchase College on Thursday, April 18 at 5:30 p.m. before playing their final regular season game at home against Mount Saint Mary on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m.
