The Maritime College baseball team came up with a pair of dramatic extra-inning wins on Sunday as they swept Mount Saint Vincent to improve to 15-7 overall and 6-0 in Skyline play.
Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) hit a walk-off home run in the 13th inning of game one and then
Nick McTighe (Merrick, N.Y./Holy Trinity) stepped up in game two with a walk-off single in the 10th. The pair of walk-off wins bumped the Privateers winning streak to 10 straight games.
The Dolphins got off to a hot start in the opening game by scoring three runs in the first two innings. After four innings of play, Maritime was in need of a momentum change trailing 4-0 and
Matt Eng (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) and
Travis Zurita (Ozone Park, N.Y./Poly Prep) provided that by adding a pair of RBI singles. However, the Privateers couldn't close the gap and entered the bottom of the ninth inning down 5-2.
Adam Mosca (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) got the ninth inning rally started by leading off with a single to center field.
Nick McTighe (Merrick, N.Y./Holy Trinity) stepped to the plate next and drove a single to right field that the fielder then muffed allowing Mosca to cross home plate safely. Two batters later, freshman catcher
Ryan Rockhill (Eastchester, NY/Tuckahoe) hit a bomb over the left field fence to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
One day after a clutch relief performance,
Skylar Graff (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) stepped up again and entered the top of the 10th with two runners on base and struck out the Mount Saint Vincent batter to keep the game knotted at 5. Graff went on to pitch the next three innings and shut down the Dolphins to keep the Privateers hopes alive.
Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) stepped to the plate to lead off the bottom of the 13th inning and delivered what nobody was expecting, his first career home run. Scerra drove a ball over the left field fence and completed Maritime's comeback win to stay undefeated in Skyline Conference play.
Mosca finished 4-6 at the plate for the Privateers, while Eng, Zurita, Scerra, and Rockhill each tallied a multi-hit game. Eng also added a big day on the base path with three stolen bases.
A.J. Ammirati (Queens, N.Y./Construction) threw six innings in the start and only allowed one earned run, while Graff threw 3.1 innings and earned the win.
Mount Saint Vincent struck first in the second game as well by adding two runs in the first inning, but this time around Maritime responded quickly by tallying two runs in the first and second inning to take a 4-2 lead.
With a 5-2 advantage heading into the sixth inning, the Dolphins mounted their own comeback and tied the game with a three-run inning.
In the top of the ninth inning, Mount Saint Vincent was threatening to take the lead with two runners on base and nobody out.
Nick Fortunato (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) entered the game took control on the mound by forcing a ground out and a double play to escape trouble and keep the game tied at 5. In the top of the 10th, Fortunato pitched his way out of trouble once again by stranding two runners on base.
Hoping to walk-off for the second time today, Maritime finally took advantage in the bottom of the 10th inning. Eric Wening and
Shane Sullivan (Stewart Manor, N.Y./Chaminade) got the rally started with back-to-back singles, then
Nick McTighe (Merrick, N.Y./Holy Trinity) ended the game with a hard-hit single up the middle that scored Wenig from second base. The extra-inning 6-5 win marked the 10th consecutive victory for the Privateers and moved them to 6-0 in the Skyline Conference.
Zurita finished 2-4 at the plate with two RBIs, while Sullivan also tallied two hits in the game. Eng continued to be dangerous on base and stole three bases for the second time in the day.
Travis Bruinsma (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) gave up three earned runs in 5.2 innings pitched, while Fortunato got the win with two innings pitched and only one hit allowed.
