2019 Poseidon Cup: A Ben Bragg Memorial Tournament

Maritime Rugby to host & restore Poseidon Cup!

SUNY Maritime Rugby has announced the restoration of the "Poseidon Cup," which will be held at Reinhart Field at SUNY Maritime Saturday, March 30, 2019 – 09:00.

Traditionally, the Poseidon Cup was held as a 1-day round robin tournament between Maritime & Military Institutions on the East Coast. The March 30th event will feature SUNY Maritime, cross-sound rivals the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), and Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

The tournament will pay homage to Benjamin Bragg, a former SUNY Maritime student and Maritime Rugby player who was involved in a fatal tragic accident in 2009.

The Privateer rugby team looks to build on their undefeated 2018 fall regular season, and bounce back after coming up just short against a #13 Nationally ranked Ithaca College in Nationals in the Fall.

The Poseidon Cup's restoration, though dormant for several years, comes at a time where the large majority of Maritime / Military institutions on the East Coast have increased competition and success to historic highs. The competition is set to be a grueling round robin, 1-day 15's tournament between each Institution. T-shirts commemorating the event will be sold at the March 30th venue.

The winner is set to reign supreme of the proud Maritime/Military collegiate rugby tradition, and will represent the best Men's-15 rugby program for the next year till the Cup's expansion and renewal in 2020.
