The Maritime College women's lacrosse team put up a dominant offensive performance on Friday afternoon against Bryn Athyn College as they walked away with a 16-5 victory. In a season already filled new records and milestones,
Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) put up another incredible performance for the Privateers as she tallied five goals and six assists for a singe-game program record, 11 points.
The non-conference game started out back-and-forth, as
Jilliana Melford (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman),
Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park), and
Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) found the back of the net in the first 17 minutes of the game to give Maritime a slight 3-2 lead. However, in the final ten minutes Deleva scored back-to-back goals and assisted on another to give the Privateers the momentum heading into halftime with a 6-3 lead.
Maritime kept that momentum rolling into the second half as they netted six consecutive goals in the first ten minutes. The offensive burst gave the Privateers control of the game with a nine goal advantage and just twenty minutes remaining. Maritime continued to play strong defense and aggressive offense throughout the remainder of the game and they were able to pull out the 16-5 win.
Leading all goal scorers was Pfundstein with six goals, taking her career total to 96. Deleva's record-setting performance came on only eight shots. Wright finished with three goals, while Melford chipped in two of her own and one assist. Wright also led the way in draw controls with 11, while
Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) tallied game-highs seven ground balls and five caused turnovers.
Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) picked up six saves in her third win of the season.
"It was great to bounce back with a win just two days after a tough loss on Wednesday," said head coach
Alyssa Guido. "We played great offensively and defensively, and I'm especially proud of how we responded at halftime going on that big run."
The Privateers get a week off to gear up for their next game as they host Wilkes University on Saturday, March 23 at 1 p.m.
