The Maritime College women's volleyball team was unable to come up with a tough Skyline Conference road victory as they fell to Manhattanville 3-0. In the Valiants first season in the Skyline Conference they were able to defeat the Privateers by scores of 25-15, 25-9, and 25-11.
Celyna Custodio (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) got Maritime rolling in the opening set as she picked up three kills in the Privateers first four points to keep the score close at 4-6. Later in the set, kills from
Erica Pagano (Lawrence, NY/Lawrence),
Meghan Eagleton (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), and
Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y./Lawrence) kept the score within reach at 10-12. Unfortunately, that's when Manhattanville was able to find their stride on offense and they pulled away with a 25-15 victory.
The Valiants were able to keep that momentum going into the second set as they jumped ahead early. The Privateers were not able to stop the big run from the host in the second set and they fell 25-9. Needing to win the third set to keep the match going, the Privateers kept it close early on as they held the lead to two points at 4-6. However, a five point run from Manhattanville helped them extend the lead and eventually pull away to win the conference matchup.
Custodio led the offensive effort with six kills, while Kirchner dished out nine assists.
Abby Solomos (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) and
Rebecca Garcia (Yonkers, NY/Academy of Mount St. Ursula) led the back line with six digs each. The Privateers will continue their tough road stretch as they travel to St. Joseph's Long Island on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Following that matchup they will return home for to face off against St. Joseph's Brooklyn on October 15 at 7 p.m.
