The Maritime College women's volleyball team traveld to St. Joseph's Long Island for a Skyline Conference matchup on Wednesday night and dropped a three-set match to the Golden Eagles 25-11, 25-16, 25-10.
In the first set,
Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y./Lawrence) got the Privateers some early momentum as she aced St. Joseph's Long Island on the third point for a quick 2-1 lead. After three straight points from the Golden Eagles, Maritime answered with five consecutive points of their own. The run was powered by a solo block and kill from
Celyna Custodio (Danbury, Conn./Danbury). Unfortunately, that was the final lead of the set for the Privateers as they dropped the opening set 25-11.
It was St. Joseph's Long Island's turn to take an early lead in the second set, and they didn't allow Maritime to make a comeback attempt. The third and final set saw more powerful offense from the Golden Eagles as they hit a match-high .417 with 14 kills.
Custodio led the offense with five kills, while
Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y./Lawrence) added four of her own with a .500 hitting percentage. She also dished out eight assists, with
Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY/Lawrence) tallying four of her own.
Abby Solomos (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) led the defensive effort with eight assists.
The Privateers will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. against St. Joseph's Brooklyn in Riesenberg Hall.
