YONKERS, N.Y. - The Maritime College men's soccer team fell to Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday afternoon, 3-1, in a Skyline Conference match in Yonkers, N.Y. With the result, the Privateers move to 7-6 (2-2) in their 2019 campaign.
Despite Maritime leading the game in shots taken, shots on goal, and corner kicks, the Gryphons were able to hold on for the win.
In the match's opening minutes, Sarah Lawrence scored off a free kick to take an early 1-0 lead. The Privateers responded in the 21st minute, when
Nicholas Gino (Levittown, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) scored off a set piece, set up by
Thomas Kropp (East Northport, N.Y./Northport). For Gino, the goal was his fourth of the season.
The score remained even for the rest of the first half, with Maritime goal keeper,
Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), making two saves.
The Privateers were aggressive offensively coming out of the locker room, recording 11 shots in the first 23 minutes of the second half. However, the Gryphons took a 2-1 lead in the 69th minute. Sarah Lawrence would score again in the 82nd minute to increase its lead, 3-1.
Maritime's offensive attack could not find the back of the net for the comeback, despite three shots in the game's final 5 minutes.
The Privateers will continue conference play on October 9, as they travel to Newburgh, N.Y. to face Mount St. Mary. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
