Men's Soccer Rolls to 3-1 Victory over Mount Saint Vincent

THROGGS NECK, NY - The Maritime College men's soccer team picked up a big Skyline Conference 3-1 victory over Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday night. The Privateers were led by goals from Frank Schmidt (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa), Anthony Sblendorio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore), and Luis Jimenez (Newburgh, N.Y./Canterbury School (Conn.)).

The game got off to a slow start for both teams offensively as physical play in the midfield was dominating the action. However, in the 31st minute the Privateers were able to break through off a goal from freshman midfielder Schmidt. Justin Forrest (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) took a throw in for Maritime near the end line and sent the ball all the way into the box. The ball bounced around at first, but was quickly picked up by Schmidt, who flicked it back into the far right corner for the first goal of the game.

With a 1-0 lead heading into the second half, the Privateers were hoping to extend their lead and they did just that in the 54th minute. Thomas Kropp (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) played a ball ahead to Sblendorio, who made a crafty play to beat the defender and squeak the ball past the charging goalie for a 2 goal advantage. Thirteen minutes later, Jimenez sealed the game with a beautiful goal off a pass from Doga Sisman (). Sisman played the ball into the box, where Jimenez flicked the ball into the top of the goal over the diving hands of the goalie.

The Dolphins added a penalty kick goal in the 85th minute, but it was too late for a comeback. The Privateers pulled out a 3-1 victory and improved to 2-1 in Skyline Conference play. Senior goalkeeper Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) earned the win with a solid 90 minutes in net. Maritime will look to make it three consecutive wins this Saturday when they travel to Sarah Lawrence at 4:00 p.m.
