PURCHASE, NY - The Maritime College men's soccer team earned a key 3-1 Skyline Conference win over Purchase College on Saturday afternoon. The win bumped the Privateers up to 3-4-1 in conference play and kept them at 6th place in the standings.
Maritime got off to a quick start as
Frank Schmidt (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) found
Nicholas Gino (Levittown, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) in the ninth minute for the first goal of the game. Schmidt crossed the ball into the box and Gino hit a one-timer into the top-right corner to give the Privateers an early upper hand. Maritime continued to pressure the Panthers with a flurry of offense, but they were struggling to make it a two-goal advantage until late in the half.Â
In the 36th minute,
Nicholas Gino (Levittown, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) scored his second goal of the game, this time off a pass from
Anthony Sblendorio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore). Gino took a lofted shot from nearly 25 yards out and found the upper left corner for a 2-0 lead.
Early in the second half, the Privateers solidified their advantage in the crucial conference matchup as
Christopher Tavernese (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City)Â scored off an assist from
Thomas Kropp (East Northport, N.Y./Northport). Tavernese took the shot from the right side of the box and beat the goalie in the bottom left corner. Maritime continued to play solid soccer throughout the second half, and they were able to hold on for a 3-1 win.
Ethan Silver (New Haven, CT/Engineering and Science University) got the start in net and finished the 90 minutes of action with four saves.
The Privateers are now 8-8-1 and can defend their 6th place in the standings as they take on Old Westbury who is 3-5 in conference play on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Old Westbury.
