OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - The Maritime College men's soccer team lost to Old Westbury on Wednesday afternoon in a Skyline Conference matchup with playoff implications on the line, 1-0. The Privateers are now 8-9-1 (3-5-1) in 2019, with only two games remaining in conference play.
Maritime started the game on the offensive, with
Anthony Sblendorio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) launching a shot at the Panthers' goal keeper in the 3rd minute. Later, in the 38th minute,
Jack Dugan (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) took a shot on frame that was stopped by Old Westbury. In the final seconds of the first half, the Privateers fended off an attack from the Panthers, as
Ethan Silver (New Haven, CT/Engineering and Science University) recorded his first and only save of the match.
With the score still knotted at zero in the 78th minute, Old Westbury's offense scored off a free kick to give themselves the go-ahead goal. Maritime's last attempt at a comeback saw a shot from
Denton Henry (Lindenhurst, NY/Jamaica) sail high in the 86th minute. Neither teams' goalie faced a shot on target in the final 45 minutes of the match.
The Privateers will return to Throggs Neck on Friday, as they host Yeshiva University at 1:30 PM on Reinhart Field.
