Men's Soccer Comeback Falls Short to Manhattanville, 1-0

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - The Maritime College men's soccer team lost 1-0 to Manhattanville College in a crucial Skyline Conference matchup Tuesday evening on Reinhart Field. The Privateers are now 7-8-1 (2-4-1) on the season.

Four minutes into the match, the Valiants drew a foul on the Maritime defense in the attacking third, and set up for a free kick. The Manhattanville midfielder launched a strike over goalkeeper Ethan Silver's (New Haven, CT/Engineering and Science University) out-stretched arms and into the back of the net to give the visitors their lone goal.

The Privateers would threaten to even the score in the 25th minute, when Thomas Kropp (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) got a shot past the  Manhattanville goalie, only to see one of the Valiants successfully clear the ball as it headed towards the goal.

In the second half, the back and forth play continued, with neither team able to open up the scoring, despite Maritime continuing to be aggressive offensively. In the 78th minute, Anthony Sblendorio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) had a shot on target but his attempt was saved by the Valiants keeper. Then with just seconds remaining in the match, the Privateers urgently pushed the ball up field, and Sblendorio was able to get a shot on frame as time expired, only to see the ball strike the right post of the net, and end the match.

For the game, Silver finished with four saves.

Maritime will travel to Purchase, N.Y. on Saturday, October 19, as they continue Skyline play, and face Purchase College. Kick off is scheduled for 2:30 PM.
