Men's Soccer Ties St. Joseph's Long Island 1-1

THROGGS NECK, NY - The Maritime College men's soccer team bounced back from a tough conference loss earlier this week to Mount Saint Mary by tying St. Joseph's Long Island 1-1.

In a physical matchup, both defenses were standing strong for the majority of the first half. However, in the 41st minute the Golden Eagles were able to strike first and take a 1-0 lead. With all signs pointing towards a one goal deficit entering halftime, Maritime was able to make one final push in the last minute. The Privateers lined up a corner kick with forty seconds left and after the ball bounced around inside the box, Frank Schmidt (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) picked up the loose ball and drilled it past the goalie to tie the game with 14 seconds left.

With both teams trying to take control of the game, the Privateers were able to control possession for the majority of the second half. Despite out-shooting the Golden Eagles 8-4 in the second half, they weren't able to put one into the back of the net. Maritime opened the half with a penalty kick in the 48th minute, but a great diving save from St. Joseph's prevented the Privateers from taking the lead.

After 90 minutes of physical play, both teams struggled to get their offense rolling in overtime and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Schmidt, Nicholas Gino (Levittown, NY/General Douglas MacArthur), and James Roland (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) led the offense with three shot attempts each. Freshmen goalkeeper Ethan Silver (New Haven, CT/Engineering and Science University) tallied four saves in the tie.

Maritime moves to 7-7-1 on the season and 2-3-1 in Skyline action. The Privateers will return to Reinhart Field on Tuesday, October 15 at 7:30 p.m. against Manhattanville College.
