THROGGS NECK, NY - The Maritime College women's volleyball team was unable to take out Skyline Conference foe Farmingdale St. on Tuesday night. The Rams held off a late comeback attempt from the Privateers in the third set and was able to escape with a 25-15, 25-12, 25-16 win.
In the opening set, Maritime went 4-0 early on, but kills by
Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY/Lawrence) and
Celyna Custodio (Danbury, Conn./Danbury)Â helped the Privateers cut the lead to two points at 3-5. Unfortunately, a seven-point run for Farmingdale St. helped them seal a first set victory as they jumped ahead 15-6.Â
The Rams were able to continue their offensive momentum in the second set as they pulled out a 25-12 win. With the Privateers needing to win the third set, they came out hot and took an early 6-2 lead. After kills from
Meghan Eagleton (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and Custodio kept the lead at 11-7, Farmingdale St. made their run and took back a three-point advantage. Although Maritime kept playing solid defense, they weren't able to string enough points together to win the third set.
Custodio led the offense with five kills, while Eagleton and
Brooke Kirchner (Lawrence, NY/Lawrence) chipped in four kills and hitting percentages of .375 and .429. Kirchner dished out 10 assists while also recording seven digs. Junior libero
Abby Solomos (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) also added seven digs.
The Privateers will look to get back in the win column Thursday night when they travel to Mount Saint Vincent for a 7 p.m. kickoff.Â
