The Maritime College women's volleyball team dropped a road matchup on Thursday night at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The Privateers battled the Dolphins to a close three-set loss with scores of 25-17, 25-16, 25-18.
In the opening set, Mount Saint Vincent quickly jumped ahead 6-1, but Maritime was able to settle down and stay in the set after back-to-back kills from
Celyna Custodio (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) cut the score to 15-10. Unfortunately, the Dolphins offense was able to sustain their lead for the remainder of the set and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set got off to a stronger start for the Privateers as kills from
Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y./Lawrence) and
Abby Steele (Crossville, Tenn./Stone Memorial) tied the set at seven. Later in the set, a kill and block from Custodio kept the score tied at 12. Unfortunately, Mount Saint Vincent went on another offensive run to close the set and went on to escape with a 25-16 victory.
In the final set of the match, a kill on the outside from
Meghan Eagleton (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) helped Maritime take a 5-3 advantage. However, once again the Dolphins were able to make a big run and take control of the set. The Privateers were unable to weather the storm and ultimately fell by a score of 25-18.
Custodio led the offense with nine kills and a .300 hitting percentage out of the middle. Kirchner dished out 18 assists while Steele led the defense with 10 digs. Maritime will head to Bard College on Saturday for a tri-match against the Raptors and Skyline Conference foe Sarah Lawrence.
