Privateers Drop Road Contest to Purchase

The Maritime College basketball team was unable to pick up its first win of 2019 as they fell on the road to Purchase College Tuesday night 43-72. Despite the tough Skyline Conference loss, the Privateers saw great play off their bench as they outscored the Panthers in bench points 30 to 10.

Brendan McGovern (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and Ronan Doherty (Danbury, Conn./Immaculate) got Maritime started in the first half by hitting two three point shots to keep the score knotted at six four minutes into the game. However, the Panthers found their rhythm and went on a 14-0 run to take command of the game with 13 minutes remaining. The Privateers needed to respond to keep the game within reach and they did just that in the next three minutes going on an 11-0 run of their own to bring the score back to 20-17 with 10 minutes left in the half. Alec Downes (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) recorded five points in the three-minute run to lead Maritime's offense.

The Privateers couldn't keep the momentum going to close out the half and the Panthers took a 12-point into the locker room. Purchase continued its fast-paced offense into the second half and was able to extend its lead and run away with the game. The Panthers tallied 26 fast break points compared to just seven from Maritime.

Ryan Donovan (North Salem, N.Y./North Salem) and Downes led the Privateers in scoring off the bench with 10 points each. Doherty chipped in nine rebounds to lead Maritime while Griffin McNally (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) tallied four assists.

The Privateers return home on Thursday, Jan. 10 to host Mount Saint Vincent at 7 p.m.
