Privateers Fall in Close Skyline Conference Contest to Sarah Lawrence

The Maritime Privateers Men's Basketball team came up just short on Saturday afternoon in a highly contested Skyline Conference game by falling to Sarah Lawrence. In a game that came down to the final buzzer, the Privateers fell in the road contest by a score of 70-67. In defeat, the Privateers were superb behind the arc as they bested the Gryphons by a margin of seven made three-point field goals.

The Privateers scoring efforts were led by 16 points apiece from Brennan Whalen and Michael Walker (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point). Walker, along with Brendan McGovern (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), tallied three three-pointers.

In a game full of runs from both teams, the Gryphons jumped out to a 15-3 lead to start the game. Regardless of trailing early in this tough Skyline Conference road matchup, the Privateers followed the Gryphons offensive serge by going on a 17 to 4 run of their own to take a 20-19 lead. Nine of the Privateers points throughout  the run came off three-point field goals courtesy of McGovern, Walker and Alec Downes (Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist). The Privateers offense would not slow down, as they connected on three more field goals to take a 36-26 lead into the second half. The Privateers 33-11 run to close out the half, came on seven three-point field goals.

In the second half, the Privateers did not enjoy the same offensive success that they did in the previous half which resulted in the loss. In defeat, Maritime had many bright spots. One of those was the play of the Privateers bench. On the afternoon, the Privateers bench outscored that of Sarah Lawrence by a margin of 28-4. Off the bench, the Privateers received a stellar performance by Walker. Walker tallied 16 points off the bench, including three three-point field goals. Along with Walker, Ryan Donovan (North Salem, N.Y./North Salem) added seven points from the bench.

The Privateers return to the court on Tuesday, Jan. 15 to host St. Joseph's (BKLYN) at 7:00 p.m.
