Gallt's Penalty Kick Completes Second Half Comeback for Privateers in Skyline Opener

The Maritime College men's soccer team won its Skyline Conference opener against Yeshiva University in dramatic fashion as a penalty kick from Parker Gallt (Las Vegas, Nev./Plainfield South (Ill.)) in the 81st minute completed a second half comeback and gave the Privateers a 3-2 victory.

Joseph Gino (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) opened up the scoring with a beautiful goal in the 34th minute, where he lined up a shot from outside the box and sent it into the upper 90. However, the Maccabees were able to answer back quickly by converting a penalty kick in the 43rd minute, tying up the game at one just before the half came to a close.

Early in the second half, Yeshiva University was able to convert off another penalty inside the box as they took a 2-1 lead with 31 minutes remaining in the half. However, the Privateers offense, who are tied for the lead in the NCAA in goals scored, found a way to tie up the game in the 71st minute as freshman midfielder Andrew Higgins (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) tipped in a rebound off his own shot.

The game appeared to be headed towards overtime, but this time it was the Privateers turn to attempt a penalty kick. Senior midfielder Parker Gallt (Las Vegas, Nev./Plainfield South (Ill.)) stepped up for Maritime College in the 81st minute and buried the penalty kick to seal the 3-2 comeback win for the Privateers.

Maritime entered the week with an NCAA high 35 goals scored, and added to their impressive total by scoring three goals for the fifth time this season. Christopher Tavernese (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) currently leads the team with eight goals on the season. Gallt's goal marked his fourth of the season, while Higgins and Gino tallied their third and second, respectively.

Junior goalkeeper Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) notched his seventh win of the season, and only allowed goals off of penalty kicks in the win. The Wappingers Falls', NY native's six saves moved him to 31 total saves on the season.

Maritime College was out-shot 13 to 11, but dominated the corner kick battle with nine compared to the Maccabees two.

The Privateers move to an impressive 7-2 overall and will look to improve to 2-0 in Skyline play on Sat., Sep. 22 at St. Joseph's Long Island at 12:00 p.m.
