Maritime Opens Up Season With Two Shutout Victories

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Privateers opened their 2018 season with back to back home victories over non-conference opponents. On August 31, Maritime picked up their first of two shutout victories as they blanked Webb Institute 14-0.

The Privateers were led by junior Anthony Sblendorio (Bay Shore, N.Y./ Bay Shore) who hit net three times for the Privateers. Sophomore Christopher Tavernese (Garden City, N.Y. / Garden City) also scored multiple times as he hit net twice. The Privateers other nine goals featured scores from key returners as well as a new comer. Senior Parker Gallt (Las Vegas, Nev. / Plainfield South (Ill.)), sophomore Anthony Palazzolo (Hunting Station, N.Y. / Walt Whitman) and freshman Andrew Higgins (Franklin Square, N.Y. / Carey) all added one goal apiece.

The defense of seniors Lucas Antenucci (Delmar, N.Y. / Bethlehem) and Joe Merendino (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) was significant in stopping the offense of Webb Institute all game long. Throughout the game, Webb Institute only penetrated for one shot.

At goal, junior Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / Roy C. Ketcham) picked up his first victory of the season and 20th of his career. In substitution, freshman Ryan Mathis (Shrub Oak, N.Y. / Lakeland) and Alec Wurtz (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) made their collegiate debuts.

The first 45 minutes of the game were scoreless as the Privateers dominated most of the play with a 17-2 shot advantage. In the opening half, Maritime also held an 8-1 advantage in terms of corner kicks.

The Privateers scored 7 goals apiece in both halves and penetrated for 43 shots as well as 25 shots on goal. As a team, Maritime combined for ten total assists.?

The following day, the Privateers hosted their second matchup of the season against the CCNY Beavers. The Privateers led by goals from Gallt and Tavernese started right where they left off in the 5-0 victory. Along with the shutout victory, Rodriguez picked up his second victory of the season.

The Privateers 19-0 point differential against their opponent is the best of the first two season games in program history. The Privateers will return to the pitch on Wednesday September 5th to face York at Reinhart Field.
