THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Maritime College Director of Athletics Kristofer Schnatz has announced the introduction of a Faculty Liaison program that will go into effect for the 2018-19 academic year.

The faculty liaison program has been developed in an effort to strengthen the relationship between the college's academic and athletic departments. The program supports the college's new strategic plan, putting an emphasis on leadership development through faculty engagement while fostering a vibrant student life experience.

The objective of the program will include enhancing the connections between student-athletes and faculty members by providing additional mentoring for student-athletes, particularly with management of academic responsibilities and communication with professors. The program will also help connect the faculty and athletic staff and promote an understanding of their respective challenges, responsibilities and approaches to teaching and working with students.

Other objectives will include strengthening the relationships between student-athletes, professors, and coaches beyond the classroom, while also supporting the academic mission of the college, while also increasing the understanding of ways in which intercollegiate athletics enhances the educational mission of the college.

In its infancy, 10 of the possible 32 opportunities have already been occupied by faculty members interested in participating in this new joint venture. Maritime College faculty members are encouraged to reach out to Schnatz, or Maritime Faculty Athletics Representative Ira Breskin, to express their interest.
