Women’s Lacrosse Squanders Conference Road Game at Merchant Marine

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Maritime women's lacrosse squandered a 17-3 loss to the Mariners of the Merchant Marine Academy in a Skyline Conference matchup at Brooks Stadium on Wednesday evening.
 
Maritime was led by junior Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) who scored two of the three goals on the game. Junior Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) added one goal to her credit while junior Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) handed out one assist.
 
In the draw control game, Pfundstein led the Privateers with six while freshman Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) added three. Junior Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and senior Christa Case (Southington, Conn./Southington) each picked up one draw control for the game. On the defensive side of the ball, four different Privateers had one caused turnover.
 
Wright was the leader in the ground ball game for Maritime as she picked up a team-high three. Salatto and Deleva each had two ground balls while five other Privateers' had one ground ball on the night.
 
In goal for the Privateers was sophomore Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington), making 15 saves and scooping up one ground ball.
 
Merchant Marine opened the game scoring the first goal at the 27:53 mark and they followed that up by scoring the next eight goals.
 
With just under four minutes left in the first half, Deleva scored Maritime's first goal to make the score 8-1. After another goal from Merchant Marine, Deleva scored her second making the score 9-2 headed into halftime.
 
Merchant Marine scored four more goals to open the second half as they extended their lead to 11. At the 17:39 mark, Pfundstein scored her lone goal of the night cutting the lead to 10.
 
Maritime was unable to figure out the Merchant Marine offense as they allowed four more goals as Merchant Marine would go on to win 17-3.
 
Maritime (3-8, 1-5 Skyline) will be back in action on Saturday April 21st when they visit Farmingdale in a Skyline Conference matchup. The opening draw is set for 12 p.m. at Rams Field.
 
Merchant Marine (9-2, 4-0 Skyline) will return to play Saturday April 21st, when they host  Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's (L.I.) at Brooks Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m.
