FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The Maritime women's lacrosse season came to a close on Saturday afternoon as the Privateers fell to the Farmingdale Rams by the score of 21-13.
Maritime was led by freshman
Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip), who tallied seven points with six goals and one assists on nine shots. Junior
Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) closed out her season with a six-point effort as she took 10 shots on the afternoon. With her five goals in the game, Deleva became the first player in program history to record 50 goals in a season.
Juniors
Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) and
Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) also closed out their seasons with one-goal games to round out the offensive output for the Privateers.
In goal sophomore
Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) made five saves as she faced 26 shots on target on the afternoon. Wright led the defensive effort with five caused turnovers while six others had one caused turnover apiece.
Wright also led the Privateers with five ground balls, while classmate
Nikki DellaSperanza (Huntington, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) had four loose ball pickups. Deleva had three ground balls, while senior
Christa Case (Southington, Conn./Southington) picked up a pair in her final collegiate game.
Farmingdale jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Maritime got on the board as Pfundstein scored off of a feed from Deleva. The Privateers were awarded a free-position shot and Deleva answered with a low shot to even the score at two.
The Rams scored the next three goals to jump ahead 5-2, before Wright scored a free-position tally with under 12 to go in the half to pull the Privateers back within two. After Farmingdale added the next goal, Maritime scored back-to-back goals as Deleva and Wright tallied markers. However the Rams closed out the half on a 3-0 run to take a 9-5 lead into the break.
Farmingdale opened the second half by scoring the opening two goals before Wright ended the run with an unassisted goal to pull Maritime back within five at 11-6. Farmingdale scored next to double-up the lead at 12-6.
Wright then got the ball rolling for the Privateers as she scored an unassisted goal followed by another goal from Deleva to pull back within four. The Rams scored the next six goals unanswered to take a 10-goal lead.
Maritime scored two of the next three goals as Salatto notched a free-position goal, while Deleva added another goal with just over nine minutes to go. After Farmingdale scored the next three goals Maritime closed out the contest with three more strikes as Wright scored twice and Deleva added one to cap off the scoring at 21-13.
Maritime finishes the season with a 3-9 overall record and a 1-6 mark in Skyline Conference games. The Privateers graduate three seniors off the roster and return a strong core of talent heading into the 2019 season.
