Women’s Lacrosse Drops Last-Second Heartbreaker to Mass. Maritime

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime women's lacrosse team opened up their home season with a matchup against the Mass. Maritime Buccaneers and fell by a 13-12 decision with a Mass. Maritime goal with 4.1 seconds left in the game.
 
Maritime was led by junior Krista Deleva (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) and freshman Sara Wright (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip), who both scored four goals apiece on the afternoon. Deleva also led the team with three assists as she had seven points on the afternoon. Junior Ciara Murphy (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) had two goals and one assist, while juniors Catherine Pfundstein (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) and Courtney Salatto (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) each had one goal apiece.
 
Defensively Wright led the team with five caused turnovers, while Deleva and Salatto each forced three turnovers apiece. Wright had a team-high six ground balls, while Deleva added five loose ball pickups./
 
Wright also led the Privateers with seven draw controls, while Pfundstein and Murphy each had two draws on the game.
 
In goal sophomore Esmeralda Hernandez (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) had four saves, while yielding the 13 Mass. Maritime goals.
 
Mass. Maritime jumped on the board first with a goal at the 26:41 mark, but Maritime responded with a goal by Wright for the first goal of her career. The Privateers took a 2-1 lead as Murphy found Pfundstein for her second of the season with just under 10 minutes gone by in the opening half. Mass. Maritime then tied the game at two with 14:51 left on the clock.
 
Maritime broke the two-all deadlock as Deleva netted her first of the game with 6:31 left in the half. Wright added two more goals in the period before the horn sounded to end the first half as the Privateers took a 5-2 lead into the halftime break.
 
Mass. Maritime opened the second half with a goal just 26 seconds into the period, before Deleva caught a pass from Wright to give Maritime a three-goal lead once again. The Buccaneers then scored the next two goals to trim the Privateer lead to one with 22:14 left in the second half.
 
Deleva scored next for the Privateers followed by a free-position goal for Murphy as Maritime opened up a three-goal lead once again. Mass. Maritime scored the next five goals to take its largest lead of the game at 10-8 with 16:11 left in the half.
 
Deleva ended the Privateer drought with her fourth goal of the game but Mass. Maritime answered back with a goal. Salatto scored a man-up goal to pull the Privateers back within one at 11-10 with just under 10 minutes to go in regulation.
 
Wright tied the game at 11, before a Mass. Maritime goal was answered by Murphy's second goal of the game as the score was even at 12 with 66 seconds left in the game. The Buccaneers won the ensuing draw and possessed the ball through the remainder of regulation, scoring with 4.1 seconds left on the clock, ultimately holding on for the 12-11 victory.
 
Maritime (0-2) will be back in action on Friday evening, when the team plays host to the Dallas Crusaders for a 6 p.m. start on Reinhart Field.
 
Mass. Maritime (1-1) will be back in action a week from today, when the Buccaneers visit Regis for a 12 p.m. start.
