The Maritime College women's volleyball team was coming off a big win from Wednesday night against Skyline foe Purchase College, however, the Privateers weren't able to keep the momentum going in a non-conference road game at John Jay on Thursday night.
The opening set got off to a shaky start for the Privateers as they trailed 7-3 early on, but kills from
Abby Steele (Crossville, Tenn./Stone Memorial) and
Celyna Custodio (Danbury, Conn./Danbury)Â helped propel Maritime to a 12-10 lead. Unfortunately, the Bloodhounds had all the answers offensively and won 12 of the next 14 points to take a commanding 22-14 lead. The eight-point advantage was too much for the Privateers to overcome and they dropped the opening frame 25-16.
John Jay continued to attack in the second set as they recorded a match-high .526 hitting percentage en route to a 25-7 win to take a two sets to none lead.
The Privateers seemed to find their rhythm offensively to start the third set as they saw kills from
Kayla Steele (Howard Beach, N.Y./Construction),
Abby Steele (Crossville, Tenn./Stone Memorial),
Rylee Malone (Southington, Conn./University High School of Science & Engineering), and
Meghan Eagleton (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) as they trailed by just one point at 7-8. However, the Bloodhounds offense picked up once again and Maritime couldn't find the answer to stop them as John Jay ran away with a 25-12 win.
Sophomore setter
Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y./Lawrence) dished out a team-high 11 assists as well as picking up five digs.
Abby Steele (Crossville, Tenn./Stone Memorial),
Kayla Steele (Howard Beach, N.Y./Construction), and Custodio tallied four kills a piece to lead the offensive effort.
The Privateers get on the court for Skyline Conference action on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at Mount Saint Mary at 7 p.m. They return to Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. against St. Joseph's Brooklyn.
