Women's Volleyball Comes up Short at Mount Saint Mary

The Maritime College women's volleyball team traveled to Mount Saint Mary on Tuesday night for their third Skyline Conference matchup of the season. Coming off a recent conference win against Purchase College, the Privateers were unable to keep the winning momentum going and fell in three sets to the Knights.

Maritime got off to a sluggish start in the opening set, but they were able to cut the lead to 12-15 following a kill from Abby Steele (Crossville, Tenn./Stone Memorial). However, Mount Saint Mary won 10 of the final 13 points to take a 25-15 win. Freshman middle blocker Celyna Custodio (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) was effective to start the match as she picked up 3 kills in the opening frame.

Senior middle blocker Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) made her first return to the court since the Maritime Classic in the middle of September and picked up right where she left off. Hayes totaled four kills with just one error on seven attempts in the second set. Unfortunately, her solid second set wasn't enough to even up the match and the Privateers dropped the second set 25-13.

In the third set, Maritime turned to Steele to lead the offensive charge as she tallied four kills on just five attempts. Once again, a strong performance from just one offensive weapon wasn't enough for the Privateers and they dropped the third set 25-17.

Maritime only picked up kills from Steele, Hayes, and Custodio as they racked up six, five, and four kills, respectively. Sophomore setter Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y./Lawrence) picked up a team-high 12 assists in the game, while sophomore libero Abby Solomos (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) added 11 digs.

The Privateers return to Riesenberg Hall on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. for another Skyline matchup as they take on St. Joseph's Brooklyn.
