The Maritime College women's volleyball team finished up Skyline Conference play with a sweep of Yeshiva University on Wednesday afternoon, 25-13, 25-7, 25-15. The Privateers offense was firing on all cylinders as they finished the match with a team hitting percentage of .339.
Maritime started off the opening frame a little shaky and found themselves trailing 4-5, but a kill from freshman middle blocker
Celyna Custodio (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) got the offense rolling as they won 12 of the next 14 points to take a commanding 16-7 lead. The Privateers finished off the set with strong serving as they tallied four aces in the final nine points that they won.
The second set began with an impressive 15-0 run by Maritime powered by seven service aces from
Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y./Lawrence). The strong serving run led to an easy 25-7 win for the Privateers as they took a two sets to none lead.
Kirchner delivered again for Maritime in the third frame as they jumped ahead 6-0 behind her serving. A few points later, senior middle blocker
Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) picked up two aces of her own to give the Privateers a 12-4 lead as they were looking to sweep the Maccabees. However, Yeshiva started to fight back and cut the lead to six at 16-10. Kirchner then turned to Hayes who put down three straight kills and helped Maritime take a 21-11 advantage. The Privateers then rolled to a 25-15 win to complete the sweep.
Hayes totaled 11 kills on the match, which moved her into second all-time in program history for career kills. The Houston, TX native has solidified herself as one of the best volleyball players to ever suit up for Maritime as she is also top-five in career aces, blocks, and sets played.
Custodio was also effective for the Privateers as she totaled nine kills on just 12 attempts for a .583 hitting percentage. Kirchner tallied a double-double with 22 assists and 11 service aces, which set a new program record for aces in a match. Sophomore libero
Abby Solomos (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) led the defensive effort with seven digs.
Maritime finishes up the regular season with a non-conference tri-match at Bard College this weekend where they will take on John Jay, Penn State Abington, and Bard.
