Volleyball Drops Non-Conference Matchup Against John Jay

The Maritime College women's volleyball team fell to the John Jay Bloodhounds Friday night at the Bard College Tri-Match. The Privateers were taking on the Bloodhounds for the second time this season, but we unable to improve on their prior result and dropped the three-set decision 25-18, 25-11, 25-13.

Senior middle blocker Meredith Hayes (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) got the offense started by picking up two kills in the first three points won by Maritime. The Houston, TX native vaulted herself into second all-time in program history for career kills last time out on the court when the Privateers took out Yeshiva University in straight sets. Trailing 19-12 late in the opening frame, Maritime went on a five-point run powered by two kills from Celyna Custodio (Danbury, Conn./Danbury). The Privateers cut the score to 19-17, but were unable to complete the comeback and dropped the opening set.

A big nine-point in run the middle of the second set for the Bloodhounds cut any momentum Maritime had from the first set as they rolled to a 25-11 win.

The third set continued to be a struggle offensively for the Privateers as they couldn't put together the run they needed to take out John Jay. The Bloodhounds took advantage of Maritime's struggles and completed the win with a 25-13 victory in the third set.

Sophomore setter Erika Kirchner (Meadowmere Park, N.Y./Lawrence) dished out 11 assists as well as adding three kills and two service aces for the Privateers. Hayes led the offensive effort with six kills and a .313 hitting percentage while sophomore outside hitter Abby Steele (Crossville, Tenn./Stone Memorial) led the defense with seven digs.

Maritime gets back on the court tomorrow at 12 and 2 p.m. when they take on Bard College and Penn State-Abington, respectively.
