Men's Soccer Stays Hot and Makes it 7 Straight Wins with 3-0 Victory Over Purchase

The Maritime College men's soccer team continued its dominance at Reinhart Field with a 3-0 win over Purchase College on Tuesday night. The Privateers have now won seven straight games, and are 9-0 at home with a 14-3 overall record. They also held onto their first place lead in the Skyline Conference with 21 points and a 7-1 record.

With the high-powered Maritime offense, it was just a matter of time until they scored and in the 22nd minute of the game, they did just that. The Privateers played a ball down the line that looked like it was going to go over the end line, but sophomore forward Christopher Tavernese (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) got to the ball just in time and sent a great cross through the box. Senior midfielder Parker Gallt (Las Vegas, Nev./Plainfield South (Ill.)) positioned himself perfectly for the cross and took a quick touch to his right before sending a rocket past the goalie on the far side to give the Privateers a 1-0 lead.

Seven minutes later, Maritime was threatening again. A long throw in from Justin Forrest (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) created chaos inside the box and eventually the ball found the foot of Gallt who had a wide open shot. Gallt sent it into the upper left hand corner, but a Purchase defender blocked the shot with his hand and received a red card. Gallt stepped up for the penalty kick and easily sent it past the goalie on the left side for a quick 2-0 advantage.

The Privateers weren't done yet and with just under 10 minutes left before halftime, they scored again. Junior goalkeeper Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) sent a massive kick down the sideline and Gallt sprinted past the defense to take the ball down near the goal. Gallt sent in a perfect cross and Shevaugn Sheriffe was there to one-time it into the back of the net. Gallt's impressive first-half performance sent the Privateers into the locker room with a commanding lead.

The Panthers offense tried to put the pressure on in the second half, but Maritime's defense wouldn't give them any breathing room. The Privateers only gave up one shot in the second half and just three for the entire game. It was an impressive performance on both sides of the ball from the Privateers as they have now outscored opponents at Reinhart Field 43-2.

Maritime controls its own destiny the rest of the way and can pick up the regular season title and host playoffs by winning its final two games against Mount Saint Vincent and Farmingdale St. The Privateers take on the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent on the road Saturday at 3 p.m. before finishing up the regular season when they play host to the Rams on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
