THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime men's soccer team improved to 6-1-1 this season with a 9-0 win over the Medgar Evers Cougars on Monday night on Reinhart Field.
It was a team effort for the Privateers as seven players found the back of the net, led by freshman
Phil Hetzer (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) and sophomore
Justin Forrest (Lusby, Md./Patuxent), who both scored two goal on the night.
Senior captain
Harry Colucci (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandenmeulen) got the night started with his goal in the sixth minute off of a long cross into the box from senior
Corey Cartano (Raleigh, N.C./Sanderson). Junior Parket Gallt was next as he scored in the 18th minute off a cross from Colucci. In the 39th minute Hetzer and sophomore
Anthony Sblendorio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) scored a goal each pushing the lead to 4-0 going into the break.
Overall in the first half the Privateers outshot Medgar Evers, 16-2, and also led in corner kicks 6-0.
The second half was more of the same as the Privateers tacked on five more goals. The goals were scored by Hetzer, senior
Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), freshman
Anthony Palazzolo (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) and two from Forrest.
Final stats saw Maritime outshoot Medgar Evers, 33-5, including 17-1 for shots on goal while also winning the corner kick battle 9-0.
In goal, sophomore
Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) started the match and did not face any shots. Junior
Nick Schall (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) took over in the second half and made one save as they recorded split shutout.
Maritime (6-1-1) will be back in action this Saturday at 11 a.m. when they host St. Joseph's College (L.I.) on Reinhart Field.
Medgar Evers (1-6) will play John Jay College this Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
