Football Week 3 Preview: Maritime at Merchant Marine

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Privateers close out non-conference play this Saturday, when the team takes on the Merchant Marine Mariners at 2 p.m. at Brooks Stadium in Kings Point, New York.

Series History: One of the more evenly-matched opponents for the Maritime football team over its history, the Privateers hold a 5-3 overall record over the Mariners including wins in each of the last two matchups. The Privateers are 2-2 at Brooks Stadium all time.

Regional Recognition: This past Tuesday, senior Matthew Murphy (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) was named ECAC Division III South Special Teams Player of the Week. It was the first selection of its kind for Murphy.
 
Weekly Conference Honors: For the second straight week, Maritime had multiple selections by the ECFC as the league announced junior quarterback Thomas Wright (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) as Offensive Player of the Week, while Murphy was also named Special Teams Player of the Week. This was Wright's fourth all-time selection, while Murphy nabs honors for the sixth time in his career to go along with one Rookie of the Week selection in 2014.
 
Passing Game Greats: This past weekend at Mass. Maritime the Privateers set program records for passes attempted (44), passes completed (32), an passing yards (342).
 
High-Octane Offense: Last season Maritime had three of its top four games in terms of total offensive plays including a program-record 100 on the road at Gallaudet. Last week vs. Mass. Maritime the Privateers had their fourth-highest offensive play total with 88 snaps from scrimmage.
 
Spreading the Wealth: The Privateers had 19 different players record at least one tackle during last week's win over Mass. Maritime; seniors Kendal Parker (Evans, Ga./Lakeside) and Nick Conte (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey), along with junior Matthew Mavrovich (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) led the way with five stops apiece. Senior Wesley Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) recorded the team's only sack for a nine-yard loss late in the game.
 
Lucky 13:
Junior wide receiver Brandonn Drumgole (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) let the Privateer receiving game as he caught 13 of Wright's passes. Drumgole became the first Privateer receiver in program history to record double-figures in receptions.
 
Around the ECFC:
Curry plays at Anna Maria on Friday night to open the weekend for the ECFC. Saturday action kicks off with Salve Regina at Dean, Alfred State visits Rochester, and Union travels to Washington D.C. to clash with Gallaudet at 12 p.m. Later games including Springfield at Mount Ida at 1 p.m., while Norwich visits Castleton to renew their Green Mountain State rivalry at 6 p.m.
