THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime men's soccer team improved to 5-0-1 this season with a 5-2 win over the Berkeley Knights on Wednesday night at Reinhart Field.
The Privateers were led by junior
Parker Gallt (Las Vegas, Nev./Plainfield South (Ill.)),
who scored two goals on the night while freshman
Anthony Palazzolo (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) scored one goal and assisted on two others. Senior
Corey Cartano (Raleigh, N.C./Sanderson) and sophomore
Nicholas Ciacca (Bologna, Italy/Pelham Memorial (N.Y.)) both added a goal of their own. Sophomore goalkeeper
Michael Rodriguez (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) led a solid defensive effort with three saves on the match.
The Privateers got off to a fast start with two quick goals in the first two minutes of play thanks to Gallt and Cartano. Gallt headed in the first goal off a long throw in from sophomore
Justin Forrest (Lusby, Md./Patuxent). Shortly after Cartano chipped in a shot from the right wing giving Maritime a quick 2-0 lead. Berkeley responded with a goal of their own in the 9th minute and then evened the score in the 41st minute as the teams were tied at the end of the first half.
Overall in the first half, both teams had seven shots while each goalkeeper had one save each. Maritime led 1-0 in corner kicks as well.
The second half was all Privateers as they scored three unanswered goals to put the game out of reach. Ciacca got it started with a goal in the 61st minute off a cross from the left wing assisted by Palazzolo. Gallt added his second goal of the match in the 72nd
minute with another assist from Palazzolo, then in the 80th minute Palazzolo scored off a pass from the right wing from freshman
Neil Dillon (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park).
Final stats saw Maritime lead 20-10 in shots and 10-5 in shots on goal, while corner kicks were in favor of the Privateers at a 5-0 advantage.
Maritime (5-0-1) will be back in action on the road this Saturday evening when they take on New York University at Gaelic Park at 8:30 p.m.
Berkeley (N.Y.) (1-2-0) will play at Moravian College this Saturday night at 7 p.m.
